The Poodle Hat Timeline!
2001
February 10th, 2001: Al marries Suzanne.
2002
March 26th, 2002: Special guest Ben Folds shows up in the studio, and recording originals for the new album begins.
March 27th, 2002: Dweezil Zappa hits the studio to lend some guitar to an original.
July 22-26, 2002: Al plays the Orange County Fair, debuts the song "Party at the Leper Colony" (on Poodle Hat),
and has a whole exhibit dedicated to him called "The Weird Al Experience". Miles Jay filled in for his father Steve
Jay on bass.
2003
February 7th, 2003: Poodle Hat photo shoot with Rolling Stone photographer Mark Seliger.
February 11, 2003: Al and Suzanne's first child,, Nina Yankovic born.
March 21st, 2003: Poodle Hat parodies and the polka medley are recorded.
March 3rd, 2003: The first round of tourdates for the (Then unnamed) album announced.
March 18th, 2003: weirdal.com starts teasing people about something happening May 20th.
April 13th, 2003: The Simpsons episode "Three Gays on the Condo" airs, complete with a cameo (And a parody...albeit
written by the Simpsons' writers) by Al!
April 18th 2003: Poodle Hat is completed.
April 19th, 2003: Weird Al's drummer, Jon "Bermuda" Schwartz, confirms the album's completion in a post to World
of Weird Al Yankovic forum.
April 21st, 2003: weirdal.com reports the cd will be enhanced with bonus mixes and home movies.
April 27th 2003: Guitarist Jim West, in an interview, confirms there's a polka on the album.
May 2nd, 2003: A mysterious track listing for Poodle Hat shows up on Kazaa, along with downloads which don't work.
The track list is heavilly debated, and at one poin, it's said to be false. But it later proves to be the real deal.
May 6th, 2003: The first parody all but confirmed on of all places, TRL. The parody? "Couch Potato",
a parody of Eminem's "Lose Yourself". TRL plays a 5-10 second clip of the song, but also says there won't be a video
due to the fact that Eminem is a big plehhy jerk. Also, Rolling Stone spills all the beans on Poodle Hat.in an article
written by Colin Devenish.
May 14th, 2003: Al is a "surprise guest" on the syndicated "Mancow in the Morning". Many songs on Poodle
Hat see their national debut.
May 16th, 2003: Al is interviewed on Headline News.
May 20th, 2003: Poodle Hat is released! Rejoice!
May 22nd, 2003: Al is a guest on CBS's "Late Late Show with Craig Kilbourn"
May 23rd, 2003: Jon "Bermuda" Schwartz chats online with members of World of Weird Al Yankovic forums. Mickey
T. Gardener is "present" and gets a question answered. Once again, thanks for the great chat Bermuda!
May 28th, 2003: Poodle Hat debuts on the Billboard album charts at #17, with almost 50, 000 copies sold, both all
time first week highs for Al!
June 19th, 2003: The Poodle Hat tour kicks off at the San Diego County Fair in Del Mar, California.
July 18th 2003: Weird Al plays at Hampton Beach Casino in Hampton, New Hampshire! Mickey really wants to
go!
